Recip-ez

Recip-ez began with an everyday question: what can I cook with the ingredients I already have? I led a team at Crimson Code 2019 exploring whether a photograph could become the starting point for answering it.

My role Team leader

01

From ingredients to an idea for dinner

The proposed workflow started with a photograph of a refrigerator or cupboard. Image recognition would identify ingredients, which could then inform recipe discovery. The goal was to connect a familiar activity with computer vision in a way that gave someone a useful next step.

02

Exploring the workflow as a team

As team leader, I helped bring the idea into a hackathon prototype. We used React and explored Google Vision and Microsoft Custom Vision APIs, combining interface work with investigation of external recognition services. Within the event’s time constraints, the project gave us a concrete workflow around which to organize that exploration.

03

What the prototype achieved

Recip-ez placed third in the junior/senior tier at Crimson Code 2019. The hackathon prototype shows an early part of my approach to systems work: start with what someone wants to accomplish, then connect the interface, data, and services needed to explore it.
